Mattituck, NY — ICVM Group, a brand strategy, web design and digital marketing agency serving both local and national clients since 1996, recently awarded a scholarship to an outstanding young woman in the pursuit of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) career. The firm recently presented the fourth annual ICVM Group Women in Technology Scholarship Award to Mattituck High School graduating senior Dimitra Pando.

Ms. Pando is a rising Electrical Engineering Student at Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Binghamton University, a SUNY school. She received multiple scholarships this year for her achievements in STEM.

In the First Year Immersion Program at Binghamton University, Ms. Pando will be a part of the Image and Acoustic Signals stream working with a team of seven on a pre-proposal studying how machine learning can be applied to detecting misinformation on social media platforms. She also plans to participate in SUNY Binghamton's Society of Women Engineers Organization, Hellenic Cultural Society Club, SnoCats Ski & Snowboard Club, and Ice-Skating Connoisseurs Club.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that, while these numbers are increasing year over year, only 15% of practicing engineers are women; 46% of those in the field of mathematics are women; and across all technology jobs, only 36% are held by women*.

“Today’s economy, research, transportation, climate efforts, innovation and even entertainment all rely on the development and use of technology,” said Stephan Roussan, ICVM Group’s Founder and President. “When men dominate STEM fields, they are allowed to decide which problems and priorities in our society are addressed through technology and which are not — always doing so from a uniquely male perspective. Diversity is key to fostering a society focused on growth. We need to hear diverse voices to accomplish diverse feats, and encouraging young women to pursue STEM careers is just one small part of that.”

ICVM Group asked the Mattituck High School faculty to recommend a student who has shown special aptitude and achievement in STEM, and who intends to pursue college studies in technology-oriented disciplines.

“We commend Ms. Pando on her pursuits in studying machine learning and hope that recognizing her career path will inspire many more young women to follow in her footsteps,” said Roussan.

Over 60% of ICVM Group’s management team is comprised of women, including leadership roles throughout the company in strategy, project management, design, development and marketing.
